Assistive Devices

Conclusion

Susan has lived with her disability for 43 years. She is comfortable letting students assess her muscle strength, analyze her gait, observe her activities of daily living and her adaptations.

She advocates a transdisciplinary team approach to assessment. She uses a transdisciplinary model in her early intervention cases and says it could be used with adults as well. There is no need to ask a person to repeat the same medical history to the physician, social worker, and therapists, according to Susan. She also suggests that new therapists who were not alive at the time of the original polio epidemic listen to the wisdom of their patients before giving advice.
