Fear of falling has been described as an ongoing concern about falling that ultimately limits the performance of daily activities (Tinetti ME, 1990), and exists even in some older adults who have not fallen. A person with a fear of falling may limit her activities, which may in turn increase her risk. The primary components of the interventions recommended to alleviate fear of falling include education, environmental safety considerations, discussion of risk-taking behaviors, assertiveness training, and physical fitness (Legters K, 2002).
Little evidence supports the use of external hip protectors to prevent hip fractures (Parker MJ, 2005).
