Falls and Hip Fractures

Reducing Falls

Home Safety Intervention

Studies have found a significant reduction in the number of falls following home safety intervention for those having a history of falling (Day L, 2002; Nikolaus T, 2003; Pardessus V, 2002).

Typical home modification checklists include:

In one study, every one of the 420 homes of people 70 and older had at least one fall hazard (Stevens JA, 2001).

As an aside, fall risk is high in medical settings, because, among other reasons, patients are in unfamiliar environments, they are less alert than usual due to medications, and they are less conditioned because of prolonged rest (Resnick B, 2003; Rubenstein LZ, 1994)
