Post-Polio Syndrome

Treatment

The original diagnosis of acute polio was treated differently in the 1950's. Post-polio syndrome is a fairly recent development so existing treatment models may be difficult to find.

The foundation for a good treatment plan is a good team evaluation - one that identifies the person's needs and strengths in physical, psychological, social as well as vocational and spiritual dimensions. Currently in practice are Rehabilitation Triage and the multidisciplinary models. A new alternative is a more holistic or wellness frame of reference using a transdisciplinary model.

Successful management and treatment in Nancy's case includes several options. Prognosis and outcomes of treatment also depend on Nancy's ability to change her lifestyle to function within her physical limits and her environment. Professionals can help determine where those limits are and what options she has to change or compensate for them. They also can help her capitalize on the strengths and resources she has.
