Post-Polio Syndrome

Evaluation

Nancy has been coping well with the aftermath of polio for 43 years. Her request for help comes at a crucial time. Issues of aging and retirement compound the changes she is experiencing physically.

Client on stair liftThe diagnosis of post-polio syndrome, losses in functioning, and the questions she raises suggest another stage of personal and physical re-evaluation needs to occur based on:

  • motor and mobility function
  • sensory function
  • cognitive function
  • psychosocial and leisure function
  • self-care, lifestyle, and vocation function

Starting with a physiatrist would be indicated at this point but because of her rural location, her internist or orthopedic physician may be her point of re-entry. It makes sense to also include therapists and the orthotist on the team to help her address the pragmatic questions -- and perhaps the social worker to address financial and psychological concerns.
