Managing Medication Adverse Effects Post Kidney Transplant

Five and ½ Months Post Transplant

Joan was experiencing diarrhea again. Her CellCept® was discontinued and she was started on Myfortic® 360 mg q 12h. Her diarrhea resolved.

She also had a DXA scan. The results showed osteopenia, as a patient on prednisone. She was started on Ca + vit.D 1 tablet 2 x day.

Her blood pressure continued to be elevated and Joan was already on metoprolol 75 mg po 2 x day, Procardia® 90 mg po 2 x day, and furosemide 40 mg 2 x day. She was started on quinapril 10 mg daily.

She was also noted to have high blood glucose level. Both prednisone and tacrolimus can cause hyperglycemia.

7 months post transplant

Her HTN (hypertension) was uncontrolled; Cardura® 1 mg po qhs was added.

10 months post transplant

Joan's potassium was 5.8, so her quinapril was stopped. Her potassium returned to normal and she was also started on Zocor® this month.
