Many health professionals have contributed to my ability to return to work following a completely unsuspected congenital defect, which almost cost me my life.
While receiving my Masters and PhD degrees, I met my wife Sherri, who was working on her PhD degree. I subsequently entered the PhD program in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Missouri-Columbia under the direction of Dr. Mark Hannink, and received my PhD degree in 1998. Sherri and I moved shortly thereafter to Munich, Germany for postdoctoral studies. Sherri and I enjoyed living close to the Alps, and participated in many outdoor activities including running, cycling and snowboarding. I often worked long hours in the lab, seven days a week.
