Recovery after Brain Aneurysm

Comprehensive Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinic

PuzzleI then attended a comprehensive rehabilitation outpatient clinic in Munich for the next six months. During this time I received physical therapy and neuropsychological training which included puzzle solving, visual perception problems such as finding an object hidden within a picture, mazes, etc., math problems, journal article discussions and art therapy.

To work as a scientist requires a tremendous amount of creativity to develop an experimental plan for your own work, as well as the ability to understand and critique the experiments conducted by others. Decision making is a specific type of brain function that is often impaired following a brain injury. Although I was quite functional, my goal was to regain the final skills necessary to be able to return to work as a scientist.

After extensive training, the results of my neuropsychological tests returned to within the normal range, and Sherri and I moved back to the states to working life on familiar ground.

Thankfully, we were required to have full health care coverage in Germany as part of our employment and visa requirements. The length of time allowed in the German hospitals was probably greater than if I had been in an American hospital.
