Post-stroke Rehabilitation of an African Woman

Opening Viewpoints

Patient

Sylvia: "I feel sad and embarrassed to walk outside because I can't walk properly. People will laugh and make fun of me. I can't visit my friends because I can't use a taxi. All I can do is watch television. My boyfriend left me and I won't get a boyfriend again. My biggest problem is my arm and hand. I wish I can write again so I can go back to school."

Physical Therapist

"Although Sylvia is able to walk independently in the house she has not been reintegrated into her community due to environmental and social obstacles."

Occupational Therapist

"Sylvia seemed sad and bored. She had not resumed her former life roles of student, friend, and girlfriend and she was reluctant to leave her home. Her family were doing many of her daily tasks for her, which reinforced her sick role and her feeling of helplessness."
