Post-stroke Rehabilitation of an African Woman

Introduction
The purpose of this case is to demonstrate a team
approach to community
reintegration of physical and occupational therapy for a young
woman 18 months after a CVA. The young woman lives in an area where poverty
and unemployment are rife. This case considers
CVA management, teamwork and community-based
rehabilitation.
Objectives
- To demonstrate understanding of a cerebrovascular accident:
definition and clinical signs and symptoms.
- To understand the neuro-anatomy and neuro-physiology of a
cerebro-vascular accident in the basal ganglia and how this will
impact function and prognosis.
- To understand the roles of the physical and occupational therapist
with emphasis on teamwork, the client-centered approach, assessment and
rehabilitation interventions in the community.
- To assist with the understanding of the concepts of impairment,
activity limitations (disability), and participation restrictions (handicaps)
as defined by WHO.
