Stress Fractures in Female Runners

Physical Therapy for Prevention and Recovery

Strengthening and stretching the anterior and posterior compartments of the lower leg is critical to preventing future stress fractures. Typically the anterior tibialis is weakened and must be strengthened. Using a theraband wrapped around the dorsal aspect of the foot with the therapist holding both ends of the theraband the patient will pull their foot into dorsiflexion. This should be done 5 days a week for 2 sets of 15 repetitions. The posterior muscles should be stretched using wall stretches to stretch out the posterior tibialis, gastrocnemius, and soleus muscles. The stretches will be held for 30 seconds, 3 times a day, 5 days / week. Heel raises and heel walking will be incorporated to continue strengthening the lower leg.
