Andrew Cole,
a physician from a rural community, was referred to the
University of Missouri-Columbia teaching hospital for improvement of his diabetic control.
He had noticed worsening vision over several months. He was experiencing significant
visual difficulties with his professional activities, his driving, and with numerous
activities of daily living. He believed that his professional life was over and
that considerable financial and personal hardships lay ahead, which he was
powerless to avoid. The diabetes physician requested an ophthalmic evaluation.
