Diabetes Education
An extensive program of
diabetes education was undertaken with a Certified Diabetes Educator / Dietician for 5 - 7 hours per week. Training was undertaken partly in
small groups, and on a personal level when using adaptive equipment,
and also to enhance his meal preparation skills. Close liaison was
established with Dr. Cole's endocrinologist. The use of sliding
scale supplemental insulin dosage and knowledge of carbohydrate counting
were reviewed during this period of close surveillance. An understanding
of current American Diabetes Association management protocols and the
importance of consistently normal blood sugars were emphasized.
- Facility in the use of his Accucheck Voice Mate glucometer for checking
blood sugar 3-4 times daily, with regular discussion of results with his
Diabetes Educator.
- Use of a Count-a-Dose (clicker) device to withdraw specific insulin dosages.
- Regular participation in monitored physical activity program.
- Application of new nutrition/diabetes care plan strategies in daily
food and lifestyle choices, with regular discussions in a class environment.
- Attendance and participation in individual and group classes for
nutrition and diabetes education techniques.
- Use of adaptive diabetes equipment and selection of appropriate snacks on both
supervised and unsupervised outings.
- Participation in community-wide weekly diabetic classes held at a
local university center.
- Participation in regularly-scheduled exercise routines, such as a
swimming class.
