Low Vision Assessment and Rehabilitation

Residential Vocational Training

Computer Training

Dr. Cole had little detailed knowledge of computer operations. Throughout his four weeks of residential training, he received extensive basic and adaptive computer training. His poor visual acuities, patchy retinal sensitivity, and impaired contrast sensitivities required the use of font sizes of 28, 36, or 72, depending on the specific task.

He learned how to create and fill out office forms using the computer. He received continuing instruction in Microsoft Word. A recommendation was made that he partly use speech output rather than rely exclusively on font size. An adaptive computer specialist contracted to provide the necessary adaptive software and training for Dr. and Mrs. Cole.
