Low Vision Assessment and Rehabilitation

Residential Vocational Training

Braille Training

The diabetic peripheral neuropathy involving his hands presented some difficulties with Dr. Cole's tactile appreciation. Of greater significance was his own lack of commitment to learning braille.

His tactile potential was assessed initially using the Kansas Braille Reading Readiness Book, and correct orientation to the braille page was established. He was trained 2-3 times per week for 2-3 hours each session, along with additional practice time undertaken with a braille trainer. He finished Grade I braille, but only partly accomplished Grade II. Braille was not a high priority for him at this stage of his visual impairment.

Dr. Cole also received training in communications using large print, and with typing.
