In the U.S.A, over 75 years ago the occurrence rate of this uncommon disorder was one/one million patients; however, the incidence may be increasing. One report has a case rate of 1/6,000 hospital admissions. The mortality rate associated with TTP was 100% until 1980s when management therapy improved. Presently, the mortality rate is approximately 95% for untreated cases. The survival rate is 80-90% with early diagnosis and treatment with plasma infusion and plasma exchange. One-third of the patients who survive the initial episode experience relapse within 10 years.
