Osteoarthritis and Exercise

Review

Exercise is an excellent tool in the treatment and prevention of arthritis, as well as a benefit to each system of our body. Exercise promotes general health by strengthening heart and lungs and by providing increased endurance during daily activities. Exercise heightens energy levels, and thus mood, which has direct effects on mental health. Regular exercise decreases the risk of heart disease and osteoporosis, and also helps in weight management. Most importantly, the quality of life is greatly heightened by regular exercise. A person who exercises regularly can do more and have less joint pain throughout the day.

We have been aware of the comprehensive benefits of exercise for years. However, only recently have we become aware of the benefits provided by exercise for arthritis. Current research demonstrates that knee pain can be treated with an exercise program. It is important for us to recognize the previous misconceptions about arthritis and exercise and work toward changing them. As Marie has demonstrated, no longer does arthritis need to be seen as a life sentence.
