Mechanical Low Back Pain
Objectives
To introduce the learner to low back pain (LBP) as a pervasive, costly, controversial and debilitating condition in our society.
To review relevant functional anatomy and relate it to possible mechanisms for pain production.
To discuss the McKenzie treatment philosophy and principles of intervention for three biomechanical syndromes.
To identify patients who are suitable and inappropriate for this approach.
To present a LBP patient, his medical work-up, referral, and physical therapy evaluation.
To encourage the learner toward a conclusion in regard to the patient's physical therapy diagnosis.
To present sample treatment progressions for the three biomechanical syndromes discussed.
To offer recommendations for prophylaxis to patients in acute LBP and when in periods of recovery.
To provide links to other LBP sites on the WWW.
