Kidney Transplant

Surgery

Transplant Surgery

Surgery for both the patient and his brother went well. One kidney was removed from the donor, Charles, and was placed in Sam's right side ( see laparoscopic surgery donor -- recipient video and conventional surgery recipient diagram.)

Surgery It took 45 minutes for the renal vein and artery to be connected to establish blood flow through Charles' kidney, now implanted in Sam's side. The kidney began working immediately. Right after surgery the creatinine level had dropped to 10.0 and the BUN dropped to 78. By the following day, the levels were 4.6 and 41. By day 3 the levels were 1.3 and 13!
