Medications After Surgery

Medications given to patients with kidney transplants include:

• Diuretics (reduce water buildup in the body)
• Antihypertensive (control blood pressure)
• Antibiotics (prevent or treat infections)
• Antacids (help prevent ulcers)
• Antiviral (help prevent infections)
• Angifungal (treat fungal infections)
• Supplements (including phosphorous and magnesium)

Medications after transplant surgery changed drastically for Sam compared to the period leading up to transplant. His new medications immediately after surgery were:

• Neoral®, 450 mg every 12 hours. This medication suppresses the body's immune reaction to reject the kidney.
• Imuran® 150 mg daily
• Prednisone 90 mg daily (to be tapered by 5 mg every 4th day until at a maintenance dose of 20 mg every other day)
• Magnesium oxide 400 mg three times daily
• Bactrim® DS daily for 3 months (Sam was enrolled in a study)
• Neutra-Phos®
• Prozac®
• Persantine®
• Omeprazole
