Kidney Transplant

Evaluation

Social Worker's Viewpoint

In evaluating the donor and recipient for transplant, I assessed both individuals through separate interviews. I looked at not only their social history and family support system, but also at their resources for managing the cost of transplant and the medication costs after transplant. I assisted them in applying for and obtaining financial help. I evaluated compliance issues in the past and counseled the recipient about these issues.

I assessed the donor for motivation and factors involved in his decision to donate, in the support for his decision, and his knowing the effects of donating a kidney in terms of hospitalization and recovery, economic and occupational changes and impact on his pending plans for moving and marrying his fianceé in the near future.

In Sam's and Charles' case, I found a very supportive family. Charles was a willing donor in spite of a multitude of changes occurring in his own life. Sam was an enthusiastic potential candidate and remained so throughout the work-up process and waiting for transplant. Sam's and his wife's families helped this young couple and Charles throughout all phases of the experience.

I was active in discharge planning post-transplant and continue to follow Sam and his family for issues such as financial concerns and problems, emotional issues due to medical problems, and any other concerns they have as they arise.
