Psychologist's Viewpoint

I look for the following in a person considering organ donation:

  • Social history
  • Family dynamics and support
  • Financial constraints
  • Potential areas of stress
  • Is there coercion?
  • Good mental status exam
  • How are the thought processes?
  • Psychological history? Alcohol or substance abuse?
  • Can the individual manage stress, and how was stress managed in the past?

With Charles as a donor:

  • Extremely willing to give to his brother
  • No substance abuse
  • No mental health problems
  • No coercion
  • Fully understanding of everything involved, including risks
  • Full consent
  • Felt he had good support from family and fiancée
  • His new job would wait for him
