Objectives


  1. Identify intrinsic and extrinsic factors associated with falls in the elderly.
  2. Describe the concepts underlying the interdisciplinary approach to comprehensive geriatric care.
  3. Describe services available from physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, health psychology and respiratory therapy to meet the needs of older adults who have complex medical issues.
  4. Identify changes that are considered part of normal aging that contribute to an increased incidence of falls in the elderly.
  5. Describe how the interdisciplinary geriatric team uses the Interdisciplinary Geriatric Assessment (IGA) form with the older adult who has complex medical issues.
  6. List steps the general population can take to help reduce the incidence of falls.
  7. Describe how the team leader facilitates an interdisciplinary team meeting, using the Interdisciplinary Geriatric Assessment form as a guide, to keep the team focused and time efficient.
